SIGNUP CUTOFF DATE ANNOUNCED
FOR TWO KEY FARM BILL PROGRAMS

COCOA, Fla. – Brevard farmers, ranchers and grove owners may be able to receive financial help in fighting Brazilian pepper, irrigating ditches, and securing clean water sources through two farm bill conservation programs of the United States Department of Agriculture.
State Conservationist Carlos Suarez of the USDA -Natural Resources Conservation Service has announced Friday, February 27 as the cutoff date for applications for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).
Local priorities for these programs include exotic/invasive plant control, water quantity protection, and water quality protection. Brazilian pepper is the most significant and costly pest in Brevard agriculture, and is the first priority to be addressed. Water quantity protection including ditch irrigation, pumped storage, pumped discharge, and surface water control are all critical and are the second priority. The third priority is securing good clean water sources for citrus irrigation, sod irrigation, and cattle.
“In these difficult times, this program is intended to lend a financial hand to those who are serious about putting conservation to work for them, as well as yielding a positive environmental result for everyone,” says district conservationist Dave Millard.
Farm Bills – Page 2

Local priorities are defined by a working group made up of Dave Millard, Natural Resources Conservation Service district conservationist; Ken Windsor, USDA Farm Service Agency county executive director; Bud Crisafulli, chair of the Brevard Soil and Water Conservation District; and Jim Fletcher, Brevard County Agriculture & Extension Office director.
EQIP and WHIP offer financial and technical assistance to install structural and management practices on eligible non-federal lands to address natural resource concerns and wildlife habitat restoration. Conservation treatment activities for EQIP and WHIP are carried out in accordance to a conservation plan that is developed with the landowner or manager.
State-wide priorities for EQIP include erosion control, water quality, water quantity, animal / plant health and confined livestock operations. Priorities for WHIP include habitat restoration on scrubby flatwoods, pine rocklands, tropical hammocks, and native grasslands for bobwhite quail.
For additional details on these Farm Bill programs and for specific eligibility requirements to participate, contact Dave Millard at 321-633-1702.
