Massive Snake Fossil Provides Climate Clues
In an article published in the February 5, 2009 issue of Nature, scientists speculate that fossils of an ancient cousin of the modern boa constrictor offer clues to the Earth’s tropical climates between 58 and 60 millions years ago. The snake, which measured nearly 42 feet long and weighed in at more than 1 ton, lived in present day Columbia and is thought to have inhabited coastal regions of rainforests. The researchers argue that because the size of a snake is related to the average temperature of its environment, they can determine that the temperature of the snake’s environment was probably approximately 6 degrees Celsius warmer than current temperatures in the region.
