Brevard Tops Florida Counties in Discount Drug Card Usage : VIERA, Fla. -- Brevard County residents have saved more than $500,000 on prescription drugs in the past five months through the National Association of Counties/Caremark prescription discount card.
The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners approved providing the free program to the residents of Brevard County in May, and the program was begun in August by the Brevard County Housing and Human Services Department and the Brevard Commission on Aging. Since then, the Brevard Card has been used by 25,000 residents to purchase over 46,000 prescriptions.
Brevard County , with a population of 550,000 residents, is the heaviest consumer of the NACo Program in the state, surpassing Broward County with a population of 1,800,000 and Palm Beach County with a population of 1,320,000. The discount card usage shows the need for this type of program in Brevard County .
The discount drug card can be used by Brevard County residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. There are no enrollment fees, restrictions or limits on the frequency of use, and an entire family can use one card for their purchases. The discount card program offers an additional safety benefit feature that alerts pharmacists when one drug may conflict with another medication that was purchased using the discount card.
The NACo card helps consumers save money on their prescription medications any time their prescription is not covered by insurance, including a Medicare Part D plan. Brevard residents who are uninsured or under-insured are able to save an average of 22 percent off retail prices, depending on the drug and the quantity of purchase. Card holders can also save on pet medications through retail pharmacies.
The discount drug card program is subsidized by the National Association of Counties.
