I am resending this message as new information has now become available. Information received today is that the House Transportation and Economic Development Appropriations Committee (TED) has a $4.3 cut to this year’s State Aid in their current proposal. It appears as though the Senate TED will put forward a cut that is lower than the $2.8 million that the Secretary of State proposed. It is vital now that the House and Senate TED committees (listed in the attachment) hear from library supporters. Please spread this message as widely as you possibly can and get advocacy going on a large scale TODAY. Let them know we support the Senate’s position over the House’s.

News from the Senate is that they have heard from several library directors recently! Thank you so much for that quick action. It has had a big impact. As is always the case, library supporters carry a much bigger impact than library staff. Please forward this message to as many as you can today! More information to assist with your advocacy efforts is available at the FLA website,
http://www.flalib.org/advocacy.

Also, don’t forget the Capwiz tool that FLA is fortunate to be able to use. It is a great way to advocate for libraries. Information on this tool is also available on
http://www.flalib.org/advocacy.

Thank you!!!

Your calls and emails are making a difference!Things are moving rapidly in the legislature. By 1:00 pm today (Jan. 5) the House and Senate Committees had basically settled on their positions. Our key message to legislators now is:- We understand the state is facing the worst budget challenges in modern times and we respect the fact that you will have to make difficult decisions and that no area will be exempt from cuts. - Support the Senate's proposed reduction of $434,000. This, in addition to the mandatory 4% holdback of $1.06 million comes to a total reduction about $1.5 million. While it feels strange to be supporting cuts to library funding, cuts are inevitable. The Senate recommendation is the least harmful to libraries. It is much less than the House proposal for a massive cut of $4.3 million plus the 4% holdback of $1.06 million for a total reduction of $5.36 million. Please call or email your legislators now. You can also send messages directly to your legislators through the Capwiz program by going to http://capwiz.com/ala/fl/home/. This program walks you through the process and automatically sends the message to your legislators. It also allows you to easily share a copy of your message with friends and family.More information on library advocacy is on the FLA website at http://www.flalib.org/advocacy.php
